Taxes and duties on gold in India
- Import duty: 15% (10% basic customs duty + 5% agriculture cess) since 13 May 2026, up from 6%. It is part of every rupee price in India, so the rates above include it.
- GST 3% is added when you buy jewellery, coins or bars; on jewellery it is charged on the full price, including making charges. (5% GST applies only to job work, when a jeweller makes jewellery from your own gold.)
- Making charges are extra and differ by jeweller and design. In Kerala and Tamil Nadu gold is often quoted per sovereign (pavan) of 8 grams.
